The Dog Days of Summer. Fun In The Sun Essential & Tips.

Here in the Midwest, it seems like more and more the seasons go from Winter, one to two weeks of Spring and then BAM, it’s Summer.  Though it’s not officially Summer yet, the arrival of Memorial Day and the end of the school year ushers in the Dog Days of Summer for most.  With that means slow days, lots of sunshine and pool-side fun and outdoor barbecues galore.

The pending arrival of Summer always has me preparing for any outdoor situation that might pop up.  That means plenty of sunscreen, bug spray, and other skin protection precautions to make even my pale as snow skin sunshine ready.

1 in 5 Americans will have a form of skin cancer.  That’s why it’s so important to protect your skin, no matter the season, but especially in the Summer when our level of outdoor activity is the highest.

As you and your family prepare for Summer Days you'll want to make sure that you are doing all you can to protect everyone's skin from the Sun's damaging rays and also be sure that you're using the safest sunscreen products free from chemicals. Check out this post for some helpful tips!

Protection from the sun is so much more than slapping on some sunscreen, though important, that should not be the only level of protection you and your family have when enjoying your sunny, Summer days.  The following tips and products will help you enjoy the Summer sun without worrying about sunburns and toxic chemicals in the products you use.

  1. Avoid being outside during the critical hours.  The critical hours are from 10 am to 4 pm.  This is because that is when the sun is highest in the sky.  If possible, avoid, or at the very least minimize your time in the sun during these hours.
  2. Check the UV Index.  If the levels are “High” or above for that particular day it is best to avoid outdoor activity during the critical hours listed above but if you really insist on being outside, be sure to follow the remaining tips below to maximize your protection levels.
  3. Wear Clothes.  This is not to suggest that you would be walking around naked but if possible be sure to wear a hat, shirt, and shorts or pants because they will shield your skin from the sun’s UV rays.  Reducing your risk of burning by up to 27%.  I don’t know about you, but I think that’s a pretty good excuse to buy yourself a cute new swimsuit cover-up.  Just saying. 😉
  4. Find Shade-Or Make It.  When enjoying the outdoors seek shade or bring a large umbrella if you are at the beach.  That way you and your family can be protected from the direct sunlight.  This is especially important if you have an infant.
  5. Wear Sunglasses.  Make sure that you and your family protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses, which will help protect your eyes from UV rays.  This is very important when at the beach because the white sand and the water will reflect the light and increase the possibility of damage.
  6. Finally, Wear Sunscreen.  Be sure that you and your family are wearing sunscreen anytime you will be enjoying the sunshine and outdoors.  You will want to make sure that you are using a broad spectrum sunscreen because the sun emits UVA and UVB rays and if your sunscreen does not protect against both your skin will not be truly protected.  The other important thing to consider when purchasing a sunscreen for you and your family is whether or not the sunscreen is toxin-free.
    1. A great resource for choosing toxin-free, broad-spectrum sunscreen is the EWGs Sunscreen Guide that they release every year.  I use it each Summer to ensure that the sunscreens I choose to use for my family are still safe for them.  They even create a convenient sunscreen store on Amazon where all of their top rated sunscreens are located for easy and quick shopping.  There are 8 little-known facts about sunscreen, which I’ve listed below.  Don’t forget to read the full report on EWG.
      1.   There’s no proof that sunscreens prevent most skin cancer.  That’s why following all of the tips outlined in this post are so important.
      2. Don’t be fooled by high SPF.  After a certain level, 50+, there is no proof that you are in fact getting higher coverage and protection.
      3. The common sunscreen additive Vitamin A may speed development of skin cancer.  Studies by federal government scientists indicate that it may trigger the development of skin tumors and lesions when used on the skin in the presence of sunlight.
      4. European sunscreens provide better UVA protection.  In Europe, sunscreen makers can formulate their products with four chemicals that offer stronger protection from UVA rays.
      5. Sunscreen doesn’t protect skin from all types of sun damage.  SPF measures protection from sunburn, but not other types of skin damage.
      6. Some sunscreen ingredients disrupt hormones and cause skin allergies.  Several commonly used ingredients appear to block or mimic hormones, and others cause allergic reactions on sensitive skin.
      7. Mineral sunscreens contain nanoparticles.
      8. If you avoid the sun, check your vitamin D levels.   About 25 percent of Americans have borderline low levels of vitamin D, and 8 percent have a serious deficiency.
    2. Here are some of my favorite toxin-free sunscreens that we love and that rated favorable on EWGs Sunscreen Guide.  I’ve also included a couple of bonus items, such as this cute cover-up and these sunglasses and hat!  *Please note that this post contains affiliate links.  By purchasing an item through these links it will result in a commission to me, which allows the content of Cookie Crumbs to remain free to you.  As always, all opinions are my own.
