Happy Monday Lovelies! I hope you all had a beautiful weekend. Wow, what a week! This recap is a week late because I was still in staycation mode on Sunday and last Monday our daughter woke up complaining of a sore tummy. Fast forward 5 days and she was on the mend but then the hubs and my mom started getting sick with the same bug. Needless to say, I’m a bit worn out. Thank goodness we had our mini staycation so I could be rested up for the week that followed! So per tradition, albeit late, Mondays at Cookie Crumbs is Weekend Recap Time!
Weekend Recap: Our Mini Staycation
For Christmas, we asked our family to give experiences rather than physical objects. One of the experiences that Addie received was a weekend at The Grand Harbor Resort & Waterpark. Matt and I decided to use Addie’s birthday as a good time to use the gift. To say that Addie was excited is an understatement. She thought the hotel room was the coolest thing since sliced bread. Seriously, everything from the bed to the tv was dubbed, “so cool!”. The only thing Matt and I didn’t anticipate when we booked the weekend was that it was the start of Spring Break for the schools in Dubuque, where we were staying.
We checked in on Friday evening and we let Addie stay up a bit later than normal because she was so excited and trying to get her to sleep was just not worth it. Plus, vacation. The next morning, at 5 am (my child does not make up for later bedtimes by sleeping in the next day) Addie was in my ear asking if it was time to go to the “water pool”. Trying to keep Addie distracted from 5 am until 10 am when the waterpark opened was a chore. We wandered around town and got breakfast as a diversion, which only kind of worked.
You guys this waterpark was pretty cool, loaded with lots of pouring water, slides and swimming areas. Trying to keep up with Addie was a task in itself but watching her dart from one place to the other as she ran on her tip toes like a hyper ballerina was comical and joy inducing. We finally pulled her away from the waterpark after a couple of hours to go get some lunch. We decided to check out a new restaurant a co-worker had recommended to me, called The Barrel House.
To go along with the theme of the packed resort, the restaurant was just as busy. I could see why though because their food was delicious and I was so hungry that I wanted to order one of everything. The staff was friendly and attentive and despite it being quite crowded it didn’t seem overly loud and you didn’t feel packed in like you often do when a restaurant fills up. We will be returning to the Barrell House for future taste tests of their menu.
The rest of Saturday was spent at one of our favorite locations in Dubuque, The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium. We are obsessed with this place, as previous Weekend Recaps will attest. We had such a busy day and Addie spent so much time in the areas we usually frequent that we didn’t even make it to their newest exhibit before they closed. I guess we’ll just have to return another day. The River Museum is a great family attraction for locals and visitors alike.
By the time we returned to our hotel we were all pretty worn out so we ordered room service and curled up in our King-sized bed to stuff our faces and watch Frozen. It was the perfect ending to our day and it was so nice to veg out with my two favorite people and enjoy being a family, with no other distractions.
Sunday was our final day at The Grand Harbor and I took in as much as I could. We eased into our morning and then ventured down to Tony Romas, the restaurant attached to the resort, for breakfast. We all indulged and enjoyed the beautiful view of the Mississippi as we ate. If you’re going to have to adjust to a time change, I highly recommend doing so in this manner. It certainly made it a bit less jarring for me. We checked out of our room but wanted to squeeze in a bit more time at the water park before we left. Luckily you’re allowed to use the water park a couple of hours after you check out.
After we returned home it was business as usual but we all felt relaxed and ready for the week. I enjoyed our little getaway as a family so much and it was just what we needed to break up the seemingly endless days of Winter that March seems to bring. We could hardly tell that the hotel was fully booked and everyone was so friendly, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and I anticipate more visits in the future.
